Statement by the Rev. Robert Moore on North Korea Nuclear Agreement
March 1, 2012--
"The welcome news that North Korea has agreed to a moratorium on its production of nuclear weapons grade uranium, nuclear weapons testing, and long range missile tests, as well as re-opening its facilities to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors demonstrates that sustained, determined diplomacy produces positive results.
"That is a lesson that urgently needs to be applied to Iran's nuclear program. Saber rattling with threats of attack if Iran crosses the 'red line' of nuclear weapons capability is dangerous and counter-productive. US intelligence is unanimous in its judgment that Iran hasn't yet decided whether to pursue its own nuclear weapon. If, God forbid, there is a military attack on Iran, it will almost guarantee that they will-the exact opposite of what the saber rattlers say they want.
"We didn't impose such a red line on any of the other nations that have obtained nuclear weapons in recent years, including Pakistan, India, and North Korea. In fact, it was after North Korea saw that the US launched a preemptive war on Iraq, which didn't have a nuclear weapon, that it built the 6-10 nuclear warheads it is currently estimated to have. If we had attacked North Korea for crossing that red line, the results would have been catastrophic.
"Earlier, sustained diplomacy resulted in an agreement with Libya-which, like Iran and North Korea, had a repressive government-to give up its nuclear weapons capability. When the former Soviet Union had a repressive, undemocratic government, we nonetheless had a bipartisan policy for decades to use diplomacy to deal with their nuclear arsenal. As a result, the nuclear arsenals of the US and Russia have been reduced from tens of thousands each to 1,550 deployed warheads under the latest treaty.
"Sustained diplomacy is the only thing that can succeed in moving back from the precipice of nuclear holocaust. War is not the answer, and will only make a difficult situation infinitely worse. It is time for the American people to join people of good will in Iran, the Middle East, and around the world in demanding Diplomacy Not War in Iran and everywhere.
